Reviving Beauty Through Recycling: Infantium Victoria's Upcycling and Waste Management Initiatives

In a world awakening to the urgency of textile waste — the images of the Atacama desert and other dumping grounds — we at Infantium Victoria have been actively searching for better options since our launch. Textile waste has many faces: from the cutting waste created when making clothing, to the garment waste when clothes go out of fashion or become unwearable through tears, stains or other malfunctions.

Sustaining Beauty Through Reuse

At Infantium Victoria, we approach waste not merely as a process to manage, but through our design philosophy. Our commitment to minimising waste is embodied in our brand-protection policy, which prevents the needless destruction of unsold products. Of course, we have had our share of wrongly produced garments — including one run of t-shirts where the print came off in the wash. But rather than destroying them, we re-designed them into better, functioning garments, adding a patch of embroidery to give new graphic appeal to the t-shirt.

Our take-back and resale programme is where this continues: customers can send back their gently worn Infantium Victoria garments, and we give them a second life through peer-to-peer resale. Our attention to cutting waste extends to our atelier in Belgium, where offcuts from our different European facilities are collected until they can be transformed into something new. Through upcycling, these fragments are reimagined as intricate designs, giving new life to what was once considered waste. This approach marries creativity with care, proving that beauty can arise from even the smallest remnants.

Recycling, Step by Step

Our work on waste continues through recycling. A pivotal step is finding a recycler who aligns with our approach, using mechanical recycling methods to turn offcuts into new yarn — the aim being a natural plant yarn born from materials that were once destined for disposal. This is the circular economy at its most practical: turning the cycle of waste into a cycle of renewal.

Good Habits Beyond Fashion

Our attention to waste extends beyond our designs. Within the office and atelier, we practise what we preach, diligently recycling paper, metal, and plastic. It shows in daily routines too, with each team member equipped with reusable lunchboxes rather than disposable containers. It is a way of working, not just a business strategy.
